Caught in the Apocalypse

Caught in the Apocalypse

“Everybody’s a mess and we are all ok with it,” remarked a dear friend of mine as we spoke through our N95 masks, shifting our conversation to the latest Nixle, 888-777 text alert. Day 6 of the NorCal wildfires left us all a bit crazed, bewildered and very, very sad. Twinges of guilt came and went as we remained among the most fortunate, neither of us succumbing to disaster nor loss.

Who and what are spared when disasters strike is never any of our business; it is Mother Nature’s. She is a force far greater than the power of mankind, but when will we ever learn that to insult Mother Nature is to forsake her? All she really wants, like any one of us, is reverence and respect. Sure she will do her best to cooperate when she is honored and revered. Sing to her, dance on her beaches, in her woodlands, ritualize devotion to her and she will grant you the most benevolent of experiences. Be in awe when you speak of her beauty and acknowledge the mysteries of life are hers to keep and ours to accept. Acts of compassion toward all of her creatures (great and small) will be met by her grace. She will guide you in times of despair, for what better a cure when the voices of  self-doubt and alienation disturb our fragile psyches than a silent walk through her forests?

And so . . . during the past 2 weeks in northern California we have all been stunned by Mother Nature’s firestorms; her apocalyptic forces of power and destruction. Fires, floods, tornados, hurricanes are not giving up and continue to top our news stories. Many of us have no doubt that she has come undone. Mother Nature has unleashed herself upon us if you will.  And what will our response be to her? Yes, of course we will seek to comfort those in defeat and to rebuild our communities. But how will we address our earth mother? How can we appease the very soul of nature?

Simply acknowledge her presence.

After all she is the giver of life and death that lives inside of us all. In whatever way speaks to you, commit to her wild splendor. Be a voice for what in nature cannot speak for itself and continuously adore her magnificence. In the wake of her devastation she is giving us the opportunity to rebuild our lives – perhaps this time we will be more inclusive of her, her designs and her glory. For our natural world understands that to harm one is to harm us all.

Make it your practice to invite her spirit into your life and shine. Mercilessly howl at the moon. Wish upon a star and yes in full-blown gratitude keep dancing upon her sacred grounds.

Here’s to continuous praise and a heart full of appreciation to all of the first responders and fire fighters who risked their lives to save ours.

Stay true world,

Maggygrace
